Pepper Spray

Troubled in my anxious sleeping,
By constant fears so smoothly creeping,
I stumble to my bedroom door,
Cold feet tripping, on the winter floor.
With a weapon fast in hand
Aimed at the unseen firebrand,
Who’s no more real than tales of yore.
I stand a moment, then close the door.
